Kinder 1.1 students explored the theme ‘Robots’ as part of X’HemM? Għal Dinja Aħjar initiative at school. They were first introduced to this theme through the story ‘Robi r-Robot’ where together with their educator discussed some differences between a Human and a Robot i.e …Robots do not eat…work with batteries….don’t have feelings and emotions.
Different kinds of robots were mentioned with the students; robots that help around the house etc..
Our own class Robot was created. The students together with the educator went to the school workshop to look for some recycled wood. Different kind of materials such as glass, plastic were noticed and the different aspects of each material was emphasised. The shapes in our Robot were discussed.
The Magnet activities was an activity that is associated with everyday things integrating it with concept of engineering and science whilst providing them with a fun activity. Some things such as paper clip/keys/plastic toy/pencil/sharpeners were tested and students observed what is magnetic and what is not.
One of the things that the children really loved doing was experimenting with electricity…buzzers…wires & batteries.
Handling locks…chains & gears the kids had some hands-on engineering where also they practiced some fine motor skills.
The Abacus which was the Robot’s tummy reinforced their mathematical concept of counting, matching and shape recognition.
